Budget Travel Tips for Exploring Canada

[ 0 ] August 3, 2012 |

Canada is the embodiment of the term “the Great Outdoors.” The varied landscape is enough to make every traveler feel swept away. From glaciers to prairies, rainforests to snow capped peaks and beaches, you will feel as though you have taken a trip around the entire world. But in reality, you can experience all of these escapes in one country.

A vacation spent exploring Canada is definitely not an experience to miss. An adventure can be had on any budget, you just have to know how to plan strategically in order to get the most out of your journey.

Whether you want to fly, drive or take a leisurely train ride, use these tips to help plan your upcoming adventure to Canada.

Flying

Like most consumers, you want to find safe but cheap flights to Canada. No one wants to spend all of their vacation budget on a plane ticket. Air Canada is the leading Canadian airline for traveling in and around the country. Air Canada regularly offers specials. Sign up online to receive free weekly newsletters that will notify you of upcoming bargain fares and discounts.

The second-largest Canadian airline, WestJet, is also one of the leading budget airlines, which will fly you into many areas of the country like Quebec, Winnipeg, Montreal and Calgary.

It’s also a great idea to start shopping early on flight comparison sites to find low-priced tickets for your trip. There are a lot of flight comparison sites on the Internet, many offering last minute specials, discounts and even the option to bid for low fares.

Driving

If a plane ticket won’t fit into your budget, or if you prefer a good old road trip, there are 22 border crossings between the United States and Canada, from British Columbia to New Brunswick.

You can find deals on car rentals on many of the same websites as you would search for airfare. Priceline.com is an excellent example. Another option is to check out opportunities to act as an “auto transporter” for a company that moves customer vehicles from one city to another in different parts of the country.

With these “Drive Away” or “relocation” companies, you put down a deposit on a vehicle, drive it along a predetermined route to a set location in a set timeframe. If the vehicle is returned in excellent condition, you get your deposit back! You need to have a valid license, clean driving record, and be at least 23 years old. You also have to find another way back home, unless there happens to be another client needing their car transported from your current location to a spot closer to home.

Train

There are four train routes on Amtrak that run from the United States to Canada. Three leave from New York and one from Seattle.

Canada is one of the best countries to enjoy a lengthy and relaxing train journey too and there are many travel agencies and rail companies, like VIA Rail Canada, that you can book your journey with.

You can choose a trip of almost any length, from two days to 25 days on the rails. With VIA Rail, you can see discounts of up to 75% on various rail travel packages.
