What to do on a honeymoon in Mauritius

[ 0 ] August 5, 2013 |

Choosing the perfect honeymoon destination is a very personal decision – after all, every couple has their own interests and idea of what is and isn’t romantic. However, I think there are a few key ingredients the majority of couples look for, including sunshine, great scenery and the opportunity to hit the beach. This is, at least in part, why I think Mauritius is so wonderful for honeymoons.

But that’s not the whole story. For me, what makes Mauritius stand out is that there’s something for virtually every couple – think beaches and spas, water sports and sky diving, great bars and delicious cuisine. The icing on the cake is that there are some incredibly luxurious hotels in Mauritius too – and we all know a little luxury is a honeymoon essential.

Below, you’ll find some information on a few of the top romantic things to do on the island during your honeymoon. I’ve tried to include a decent variety to give you an idea of how the destination can suit couples with different interests.

Whenever anyone says the word ‘honeymoon’ to me, indulgence is usually one of the first things that springs to mind. And when it comes to sheer decadence, I think being pampered with spa treatments on a paradise-like island definitely fits the bill.

With any holiday – but perhaps especially with honeymoons – it’s important that everything feels easy; by that I mean that you don’t need to travel on a crowded bus for a few hours every time you want to enjoy yourself. So, I recommend booking a hotel that has its own spa, like the One&Only Le Saint Geran, the Royal Palm or Dinarobin hotels, to enjoy luxury at your fingertips.

You can’t come to Mauritius and not spend any time on its beaches. Lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, the sands here give you the chance to experience your very own slice of paradise.

Since it’s your honeymoon, I’d recommend making one of your trips to the beach all the more memorable by booking a visit to Ile aux Cerfs – a nearby island known for the calibre of its coast. Plus, it offers plenty of water sports should you fancy getting a bit more active, as well as some excellent seafood restaurants.

While lounging around on the sand and being pampered in a spa is all very well and good, it’s not everyone’s idea of romance. If you and your partner prefer your adventures to be a little more fast-paced, you should definitely consider going skydiving. After all, you’re not going to enjoy a much better view on the way down than you will when descending towards Mauritius!

SkyDive Austral is the company to contact to arrange your jump, and it’s definitely worth doing so sooner rather than later, as trips get booked up fast.

Scuba diving

Last on my list is going scuba diving. Thanks to the sheer variety of dives and marine life in Mauritius, this is likely to be one of the most memorable activities of your trip. Several companies offer scuba diving for people of all abilities, but experienced divers are in for a special treat because here they will be able to go wreck diving, explore canyons, caves and chimneys and see an incredible concentration of colourful marine life.
