Top 5 Things to Do in Cancun

[ 0 ] June 13, 2012 |

With a history stretching back to the days when Mayans roamed the streets, Cancun’s tropical climate and archaeological sites are a real draw for overseas visitors and flights to Cancun are affordable. Conjure up images of beautiful sandy beaches, clear blue waters, vibrant urban spaces and bustling marketplaces and you will gain an idea of this Mexican paradise. A few favourite things to see and do include the following:

Scuba Diving

Home to the world’s second largest barrier reef, Cancun is a popular destination for divers from around the world who seek out mysteries below the waves. Underwater visibility is great throughout the year and there are many centres for both beginners and advanced divers. Bat Cave offers stalactites and large columns while marine life is abundant – witness everything from dolphins to sea anemones, barracuda, starfish and lobster.

El Centro

A thriving downtown area, El Centro is buzzing with markets and malls for those looking to purchase those all-important souvenirs for friends and family. Look out for a massive sculpture of shells and starfish on the main thoroughfare, Avenida Tulum.

Plaza de Toros

Not for the fainthearted, bullfights can be enjoyed every Wednesday afternoon when man and beast come together for a gripping ‘dance’ involving plenty of energy and an intelligent fight. Watch spellbound as the matadors use their capes to ignite the battle.

Ruinas Del Rey

Situated within the Hotel Zone, Ruinas del Rey or Ruins of the King dates back to 200 BC. Thought to have been a royal burial ground, due to the presence of skeletons, as well as an astronomy lookout, two main plazas are joined by two streets here. Fresco paintings are visible inside and this is often much quieter than many of the larger archaeological sites making it a fascinating yet peaceful retreat.

Day Trips

Taking a trip outside of Cancun can be well worth it if you have several days to fill. Adventure-seekers can enjoy the biggest zipline circuit in North America while dinner and carnival cruises are popular in the evenings. The ancient capital of the Mayan empire is just a bus ride away too!

Flights to Cancun are easy to book so why not think about a late summer break?
